Extending the life of Our Groceries and the Menu Plan for 3/1/22!

With the price of groceries I've been looking at extending the life of the groceries we bring in.  I've been seeing this technique on the internet over and over so I thought I would give it a try.  There were many ways to do this but I decided to wash them, dry them, put them in a jar,  and put a piece of napkin between the lid and the jar to absorb the moisture. In the refrigerator they go till someone decides to eat them.  I had two and half quarts about 4 or 5 days ago.  The grandchildren already ate the half quart with cool whip on top.

So far, they look as good as the day I bought them which was about 4 days before I decided to try this.  So, these strawberries are about 8 or 9 days old and still looking good.

I also wrapped my celery and green onions in foil to help them last longer.

How do you extend the life of your groceries?

The husband was in charge of getting meat out of the freezer for the next few days and I had to laugh.  Steak and Pork chops with pork chops twice.  He knows what he likes!  I did talk him into some chicken for one day.

We both were busy getting our our hair cut yesterday after delaying it till things calmed down again (that's just how we roll -we are making our dentist appointments today).  I  so was happy for the Easy Smoked pork chops yesterday because they are basically just fried on the stove till warm and browned.  Well, peeling the potatoes was a little time consuming.

My hair was very thick and too long for me so three inches were cut off.   My neck feels relief!  You might say well cut your own hair...no we did that and oh boy it took awhile for us to get it back even.  We both just can not cut hair.  It's very sad not to have hair cutting talent.

Our Menu this week:

Monday             Smoked Pork chops and fried potatoes with onion

Tuesday             BBQ Chicken Wings, green beans, and Corn Bread

Wednesday        Pinto Beans, Leftover Corn bread, and any leftover chicken from Tuesday.

Thursday           Steak and Potato

Friday                Pork Chops and a Salad

Saturday            We are going to a hike with the grand kids that leads back to a maple syrup shack in a nature park. I'm so glad it's March and we are headed towards Spring, winter has been boring for the most part.  We are going to have a very late breakfast of pancakes with their maple syrup and sausage so that will be our dinner for the day.  Dinner is $6.00 a person.

Sunday              Taco's (we didn't have last week)

Breakfasts:  eggs, Fried bologna, or oats

Lunch, your on own.

According to how much energy and time I have this menu could change at any time (sometimes it's much to the delight of my husband). Looks good though doesn't it?

What's on your menu?

I have a bunch of Rubbermaid produce keepers and everything goes in those. Grapes will keep for a month! Lettuce two weeks, strawberries about 10 days celery about 6 weeks, cucumbers about 10 days.

Sunday we had hamburgers and potato salad
Monday-Chic ken sir fry and salad
Tuesday-bacon wrapped chicken tenderloins and potato salad
Wednesday-Mongolian Noodles with beef
Thurs-Mexican beans and rice
Friday-Lasagna and salad
Saturday-sloppy joes and potato salad if there is any left

I have the crockpot loaded up with soup for lunches for the next few days and I baked peanut butter chocolate chip bars this morning for sweet treats but most will go in the freezer. It feels good to be top of meals for the week!

I really like your blog. I've been reading it for a long while but I think this is the first time I've ever commented on it.
I completely understand the hair cutting issue. I would never, ever attempt to cut my own hair as long as I have to keep appearing in public. I just don't have the dexterity or steady hands to make it come out even.
I try to only buy and make foods that I know will be eaten before they go bad. I live alone (except for two cats) so it is a challenge but fortunately I've never minded eating leftovers. Sometimes I have leftovers from dinner for breakfast the next day. I also freeze some things. It's great to come home from work and pull something out of the fridge that I've thawed and just heat it up. It keeps me from stopping for a burger on the way home.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who can't cut hair ...I wish they had taught the basics in school.
Leftovers are so nice...Time to read and not cook plus very little dishes to do!
I'm glad you commented BaggysMama!

Your menu sounds so good Chicken Stir Fry..so good I bet. You reminded me we have a can of sloppy joe mix in the cupboard. I'll save it for youngest daughter's birthday..she loves it.
I'm going to look and see about the rubbermaid produce keepers..this stuff is too costly to give to the chickens.
Have a good day Lana!

Unfortunately they changed the keepers recently. The ones I have have a tray in the bottom and the new version does not. The reviews on the new ones are not great because the produce can sit in water in the bottom. There are a bunch of brands on Amazon though so something should work.

Well I just cancelled my order because some of the reviews said the same thing..still looking! thanks Lana!
