I finished the pillowcase for my Mother in Law and sent it off on Wednesday for Mother's day. The cost of mailing everything of course as risen ($34.00 for the large box). She is worth it though and we are so blessed to have her.
Price of gas rose very close to $5.00 a gallon on Wednesday night here in Michigan...
Anyway, we had decided to go on Tuesday morning and filled up two cars with $1.00 off a gallon at Meijer. We saved $30 that day ...it would have been more if we had waited. We find that the money off gas is the best deal on MPerks. There are other deals to buy with the mperks but the gas to us is the best deal.
We also bought a lot of the $7 for 7 deals last week. The apples and corn was our favorite deal...4 corn on the cobs for $1.00 and 2 lbs of apples for $1.00. By the way, the same deal is running this week.
Free things this week (kind of)
I made a big spring salad with lettuce, green onions, and radishes from my greenhouse.
I also picked some asparagus and chives in the garden. Not sure what to do with just 5 stems but I was excited!

There are 5 or 6 states here in central US that got a big jump on gas prices midweek due to the problems at the Whiting plant down south. Striking employees and some power outages. Our Gov. has suspended gas tax here. I used Kroger points to save .80/gal. this week. I don't go out much, so didn't need a lot. Won't be out garage saling for a while here - not wasting gas.
That is a beautiful pillowcase. How blessed y'all are to still have a parent.
Gas is around $4 here. Sam's is $3.75 this morning but it goes up daily. Thankfully we only use a tank of gas per month.
We went garage sailing today Cheryl..prices were high and not many people going ..I think like you the price of gas is just too high.
.80 saved a gallon is great. We have to look for all the savings we can.
She is our last living parent. It's amazing we have her!
I wish our gas was that low here...some kind of refinery thing going on. Have a great weekend Lana!
Hello Vickie from Australia it has been a while since I commented here.
We have been on a painting frenzy here since before Christmas on a new set of front stairs and stringers, weatherboard single garage, rainwater tank stand shed, a tool shed, and yes we have a outhouse too. The people who owned the property before us did not use any undercoat so there was paint peeling off everywhere so there was a lot of prep work on approx 300sq metres all up. Working it out to get a professional painter in to do the prep and painting it would have cost us around $24,000 and with buying a new spray painting kit, a little detail sander, all materials and paint we have done it for around $3500 so a huge savings of around $20,500. I still have 2 more doors to paint green and DH needs to do 2 more window sills and we will be finished. I officially hate timber weatherboards after this and the next home will be brick LOL !.
I also have been decluttering and tidied up the back sort of mud work room and DH has been dismantling old garden tools we cannot get parts for that no longer work to bin them. There was lots of cardboard boxes in the room so they are now in the recycling bin.
We got 12 x 600ml bottles of thickened cream a while ago free from an op shop at end of day so this week we made 10 of them into 5.1 x 500g blocks of butter for the freezer. We froze some buttermilk in ice cube trays for making pancakes and cakes and used the other 1.75 litres for our morning hot chocolates. This saved around $39 including the buttermilk we used for our hot chocolates.
That is a high price for fuel there which is about an equivalent of $1.83 Aud per litre and we are paying around $1.735 here with discounts for 91 fuel. The gov here has halved the fuel excise and the states have decided to forego GST revenue on fuel for the next 3 months to 30th of June. Otherwise our fuel would be .32c per litre more than what we paid.
Hope you and everyone has a wonderful week ahead.
Lorna.
Hi Lorna, I'm so glad you commented!! You are busy painters for sure-but what a savings! Labor costs are the worst and brick is the best. We just had someone come for estimate for our roof yesterday-we will know today what he says. One guy said $30,000 for just our little 1200 square foot home...nope! If I could I would roof it with my husband but we are too old to be getting on that roof!
What a deal on thickened cream. Lot of savings there.
Gas just keeps on going up and one airline has went bust here (spirit) because of the high cost of jet fuel. I'm glad your gov is looking out for you!
Have a great Sunday!
The pillow case is lovely, Vickie. I am floored by the price of gas right now. $5.00 is unreal! We saw the cheap gas yesterday and i was going for $4.19, which I never thought I would see here. We did not let it stop us from yard sales this weekend though.
Vickie the fuel crisis is affecting everyone unfortunately (glad we have some temporary relief) and sorry to hear one of your airlines went bust but I am not surprised as many airlines are cutting many routes on their flights due to not being able to get enough jet fuel in many countries. The price quoted in Aud was for the fuel being $5 usd a gallon converted to Aud.
Geepers that price for roof painting seems extortionate and I would be getting a few more quotes and see if the painters have good reviews from customers too. Tradies are asking extortionate prices for doing anything here too. We found a good older builder that is a jack of all trades that does most work around our home if needed and he charges under half what handymen or specialised certain job tradies do.
Thank you and hope you get a much more reasonable quote on your roof painting as your roof is not that big of a job to paint.
Lorna.
Lorna, You know the guy down the block did have his roof painted with something to make it last longer...it's an idea for sure. We called for a roof replacement though ...now I'm thinking about the painting stuff. The man didn't come back yet probably because it was Sunday. We have another to call after he does...the prices are so expensive but this will last our lifetime...hopefully.
Have a great week.
