Book Review and Giveaway: Charlie the Tramp by Russell Hoban

 Charlie the Tramp

Charlie the Tramp  (hardcover)

From Amazon:

Charlie the Beaver wants to be a tramp when he grows up. “Tramps don’t have to learn how to chop down trees and how to roll logs and how to build dams. Tramps just tramp around and have a good time. Tramps carry sticks with little bundles tied to them. They sleep in a field when the weather is nice, and when it rains they sleep in a barn.” Charlie sets off with his bundle. But when he hears water trickling, he can’t get to sleep. Will he be able to resist the urge to make it stop? As Grandfather Beaver says, “You never know when a tramp will turn out to be a beaver.”

Winner of the Boys Club of America Junior Book Award, 1968

My thoughts:

I was so delighted with Charlie the Tramp!  Such a unique story line that will capture a child's imagination and draw them in.  The story flowed so perfectly with just the right amount of pages so the children won't get bored.

The wonderful illustrations help bring the story to life. Children will delight in the pictures showing how Charlie spends his days and nights as a tramp.

The story carries a great message with values, family, and work ethic included.  I especially felt for the parents of course, with the worry about letting Charlie go.  I also loved that Charlie surprises even himself with his skills and the different way his life as a tramp turns out.

Charlie the Tramp is a classic book that is back in print for the 50th Anniversary hardcover edition.

A wonderful wonderful children's book!
