My Frugal Ways this Past Week 11/24/19!

In just a week 10 inches of snow has melted and we were able, for the most part, rake the leaves that have fallen.  We plan to finish that work up today or tomorrow while the weather is still good.  The tree in the front yard and the tree in the side yard still have their leaves.  Seems that this is far later than normal.  I guess eventually they will blow off this winter.

We've been putting the leaves in the garden to help the top soil stay in place during the winter and to add nitrogen.

I sold an item on Facebook.

I baked a big pan of cornbread and froze some for the cornbread dressing.  I also made and froze cupcakes for a birthday that is coming up.

As part of gift bags for my friends (they have already received them) I baked sugar cookies and decorated them.

I found roast on sale!   You can read about see what I made with the leftover roast here.

My goals:

Defrost the turkey and make more dishes ahead for Thanksgiving.

Finish cleaning that refrigerator!

  1. My every day frugal ways are almost out the window. We are deep in the middle of our bathroom remodel but we may actually be finished before Thanksgiving with one bathroom, if not by Thanksgiving the first of next week.

I do have some remodeling savings though.

We've been eating out a lot, mainly because we're out picking something up or trying to make decisions & just need to eat (my husband has to eat at certain times with type ! diabetes). So I bought a rotisserie chicken & we've been pulling bits off to eat with a piece of fruit or cheese as we work instead of cooking meals.

My husband scraped the popcorn ceiling this week rather than pay labor to have it done.

I started staining trim to go around our windows rather than pay the labor.

We are having our old vanity repaired rather than buy a new one.It has some water damage on one side but the cost of one of the same quality is close $1,000 so we're paying around $200 to have it repaired then I will paint it.

They were able to save all the trim & flooring when they gutted the room so we will reuse it...I am so glad. I love my flooring & didn't want to have to buy new. (another reason for repairing the vanity...a new one would mean a different size & new flooring would be needed)

I may try to list some of the old fixtures online to sell. I can't decide if I really have the energy to deal with it. Sometimes my time is worth more than the headache of selling.

  2. I know it doesn't seem that way Jenny but you are saving a lot of money!
The amount of your labor alone would be a lot of money! Soon it will be over, beautiful, and you will not be able to stop looking at it! Have a great Sunday!

  3. Your cookies are adorable, Vickie. Ten inches of snow is a lot already. Glad it has melted already. We had a lot of rain, which is helping the leaves to come off of the trees.I like it when that happens because our internet works better when the leaves are off the trees. LOL

    1. Belinda that is so funny about your internet working better once the leaves are gone! We finally got done raking the leaves this afternoon. Any more leaves come down they are on their own.

  4. Cute cookies!

Hubby repaired our broken attic stairs by building a new section. He also repaired our riding mower on Friday. These two things saved us a ton of money!

We were out running errands and playing all day on Wednesday and ate breakfast, lunch and ice cream for only $12 for the whole day. Yay for coupons!

  5. This last week I didn't do much to specifically save money. I made a special trip to a grocery store very close to me, because they had some items I needed on sale. I don't usually shop there. In the process I purchased a container of 4 kumatoes for $4, but one of them was starting to rot--I later discovered. I was going to take it back the next day, but it was cold, windy and raining, so I decided not to go and just threw away the tomato--and thus, the dollar. I had been planning to buy some special key chains for my 6 grandsons for Christmas. They are custom made by The Faithful Merchant. She was having a special sale and I got a coupon code for 20% off, which I was excited about. I've been keeping a good eye on the fresh vegetables I have on hand and trying to be sure I eat them before they go bad. Also, along with that I'm trying not to overbuy on fresh fruits and vegetables, which I often do. I'm eating more eggs, in place of meat. I chose not to go out for dinner with friends, so I saved $12-$16 there. That's about it! Happy Thanksgiving!

    1. Sounds like a great deal on the keychain for the boys. I love that idea too.
I hate it when I have to throw away food too. Threw out a couple of things today cleaning out the fridge. Need to be more careful!

  6. Hi Vickie and you have done a lot and your cupcakes look adorable :).

Goals this week are to put an elbow on the back gutter to run the water from the back patio into the collapsible rain water tank we have. If we ever get rain we might have our pool back to swim in as being on water restrictions we can't fill it with town water at the moment.

Our Vicky savings added up to $87.04 last week :).

    In the kitchen -
    - Cooked all meals and bread from scratch.

    In the gardens -
    - Picked 7 bunches of silverbeet and 1kg of green beans saving $29.50 over purchasing them in the shops. We blanched and froze most of them for advanced stocks for the freezer.

    Internet listings -
    - Listed 10 items on eBay a free listing promotion saving $16.50 on usual listing fees.

    Purchases -
    - On price reductions we purchased 6 pk grain jumbo bread rolls, 1 x 6pk jumbo wholemeal bread rolls, 3 x 6 pk wholemeal dinner bread rolls, a pepperoni pizza loaf and 12 pk of donuts saving $5.71 on usual prices.
    - Ordered a gift card from RACQ for groceries saving 5% or $7.63 on usual prices.
    - Did an online order for a fortnights worth of groceries and coupled a $15 off promotional code and weekly specials to save $23.70 on usual prices.
    - Purchased from IGA 2 x 200g of butter mushrooms on clearance for $2 total saving $4 on usual prices. They were fried with steak one night and used on a homemade pizza which will last us another 2 nights for dinner.

    Water preservation -
    - Did the usual and used grey water from our tanks to water fruit and berry trees, saved shower water to water potted plants, fill up drink bottles and clean the bathroom and toilets with and dish rinsing water to water potted and ornamental plants.

Hope everyone has a wonderful week ahead :).

    1. I'm so glad Lorna your garden is producing despite the lack of rain. I hope you get relief soon. I know you would love to swim in that pool.
You had a great savings week that's for sure!
