My Grocery Shopping Deal of the Week (growing my own groceries)!

My grocery shopping deal of the week was seeds!  These seeds will make groceries, so this is my fantastic deal of the week.  I'm going to work hard as I can to make my garden a success as always and when I can gather up seeds at this price I do.

Menard's had these seeds for .10 a pack (still on sale Saturday).  All of these packs were Heirloom seeds, which is very important. These are seeds I can save and replant again.  The GMO seeds you can not, they will not grow again.

So, I went in and gathered up carrot, pepper, lettuce, mustard, marigolds (we need great flowers for bees), cucumbers, tomatoes, and broccoli seeds.   The cashier couldn't believe I bought all these seeds but I think I should have bought more!  I guess I'm a seed hoarder.

Why do I feel the urgency to gather seeds?   Well, last year with the flood, we had to plant twice and in some instances I planted rows very late while we waited to dry out.  I really took a chance there would be a later frost. If I have to do this again, I have my seeds for a cheaper price. If  my crops fail I've only lost a little bit.  Plus I have more in my seed library to plant for next year.

Here is to a bigger better garden and lower grocery bills!

Are you growing a garden  this year to help combat the rising price of groceries in your area?

Vickie we will be planting a big garden this year. I won't have exact numbers until the garden is completely done and I can keep track of the yields, but I figure each .10 pack of seeds will yield between 30-50 pounds or more of produce. That's a lot of food for such a small investment.
XOXO

Wow. You did good! Our library just started a seed bank. Each time we go we can choose 5 free packs of seeds! We can also bring in seeds we will not use to donate. The seeds are in the old card catalog drawers which is just cool. I am really excited about this for our community.

I cannot decide what to do about a garden. I stopped growing one about four years ago after three years of absolutely no harvest because of deer & squirrels. Seriously, they ate every thing I planted. I really miss fresh homegrown produce.

That would be so disheartening Jenny. I've seen some high fences around here too. That one year we had 3 different gardens towards the back and the deer would stop at one neighbors for breakfast, one for lunch, and ours for the big finale. They put in a gas pipe line in the field and scared them all off last year and stopped the buffet, so we had a flood instead ha ha. I couldn't be a farmer..nope just couldn't!

Orange peels repel squirrels. They hate the smell of them so much that I typically put them out one time and they never come back. (Also because they are stupid.)

What a great deal on the heirloom seeds! I am putting in a seed order this weekend or early next week and setting up the seed starting station in the now extra room that our older daughter just moved out of. I am desperate to grow as much as possible, and organically, so I can eat as I've been told is best for me. I simply cannot afford organic produce where we live, plus there's simply not a lot available. Best wishes and prayers for just the right amount of rain for a beautifully productive garden for you this year!

Great buy on the seeds. When I used to have a garden, I always loved looking through the seed catalogs this time of year and dreaming of a wonderful garden and delicious fresh vegetables!

That truely is a deal! I no longer garden because of health issues and a husband who has retired and said he's retired from yard work also, and we moved to an apartment. So my plans are to find big pots at thrift stores to plant a few items. I would like to try pole beans, tomatoes, pea's on a trellis, mint tea, and chocolate orange tea. I wish you better luck this year, I can still see your flooded garden pictures, that hurts I know.

I'm the same way Jenny, that's what I love best about garden, I know how it's been grown. You get far more out of your garden for the price too.
