I'm trying to keep down the trash in our house and reducing our waste (I hope it doesn't gross you out or anything).
Sunday my trash went from this:
Seems like sometimes people forget there is a recycle bin out the back door (even me). The recycles that came out first were the tissue box (minus the plastic ring), a box for medicine, and an empty medicine bottle.
I also got out everything that could be composted. There was leftover popcorn in the bag...so I had to do some research and see if I could feed the wild birds leftover popcorn (that search earned me 9 swagbucks whoo hoo)! The Audubon has a post about stringing popcorn that really looked like a lot of trouble, so in the end I decided to compost it along with the dead flowers and the coffee grounds we used this week!
I then crushed every thing underneath like little chocolate milk containers and Mcdonald's cups etc. to make more room, you guessed it ..for more trash!
As I've been Spring cleaning, I put things I no longer want in boxes by our trash, and every week someone picks them up. You gotta love that because I don't have time to go and find out if the donation area at our local thrift store is closed today or not (not sure why they close it).
In this box, kitchen curtains are at the bottom and a pan I no longer wanted (it's extremely heavy and I have such a hard time putting it in the upper cupboard-so it's out of here). I've since added to the box, a cup we used for little granddaughter that she has outgrown.
So one plastic trash bag, or more, saved in one day and I'm helping the environment!
How's it going in your neck of the woods?

Great job! You are helping your neighbors too with your freebies. I need to do better. We have snow on the ground, and I don't want to trek to the compost pile, so kitchen scraps have been going in the trash.
Yay you! We recycle and compost and have gotten our trash down to 2 bags most weeks but there are no kids here and only the two of us. We have a basket from Dollar Tree in the kitchen for recyclables. Only problem is that it fills up quickly and we hate having to take it out and sort it into the bins in the garage.
We have no snow to really speak of here. I've never been able to get to the compost in January before so I know what you mean Kathy.
Just two bags..oh how I wish! It's good idea to have that basket in the house. one thing god for us, we don't have to sort recyclables or it would never get done LOL.
I am getting much better at recycling newspaper, cardboard and glass jars (instead of hoarding them!) and have a basket in my pantry that I fill with both plastic and glass to be recycled. I am horrified at the amount of plastic food packaging that fills my trash bin, and have started to can my garden fruit instead of freezing it in yet more plastic. All our food waste is either composted or fed to the chickens.
I'm so glad that we have chickens. They do eat a lot of our scraps. Plastic horrifies me too!
I live by myself, so taking care of trash is pretty easy. However, when anybody else comes by, I do what you did--pick through trash--LOL! I mean, why would you put a huge take-out cup in the trash w/o smashing it or a half-full bottle of water w/o emptying it--LOL!
Yes! I have had that happen here too.it's amazing how much more room you have when you smash things. Trash bags are expensive too!
