On the other hand, we had more trick or treaters than previous years. We had a blast seeing all the kids with their costumes on.
How did we do for October homestead chores?
In between rains we expanded the chicken run, dug the potatoes, canned zucchini pineapple, canned apple pie jam and grape jelly, and of course finished a hundred other little things I didn't list.
Truth: I just gave up on the perfect weeding of the strawberry bed and covered it with leaves. All traces of strawberries and weeds are now hidden. It felt good.
I remember when company was coming and Mother hid all the dirty dishes in the oven. I understand now. Completely hidden from her mind and the company!
What we hope to accomplish for November Homestead Chores
I thought they were a goner. After the snow and cold weather it looked like the mustard greens were done. Frozen solid. As the weather warmed up during the day they came back to life and look great now. There just might be the chance they will make it. I really hope husband is right and I'm able to can some.
The painting is coming this next week, I hope with the promise of a little warmer weather.
Finish empyting one more rain barrel so it won't freeze and crack with the cold (it kept filling up before I could turn it over).
Finish raking the leaves in the garden. Not all the leaves are down yet so we are still out there.
Our table is full of seeds I've gathered (we sit and eat surrounded by seeds). The zinnia seeds are in the garage drying in a paper bag. I need to gather the Kentucky wonder green bean seeds soon and then take down the bean teepees.
We just bought the Jenga game at a sale and played it last night with the grand kids. How in the world do you get Jenga back in the box?
We need to get ready for snow and freezing temps:
Gather up outdoor pillows after they dry and store them in the garage, move patio furniture and grill out of the way for shoveling, find the windshield scrappers in the garage (should have already done this), and put on grandma's heavy quilt on the bed. Brr.
Are you getting things done and ready for winter?

Oh, yes! I have all my heavy blankets on the bed now. I'm going to be covering the windows with plastic inside this weekend. It was 24 degrees here yesterday morning, so very chilly. I'm glad your mustard greens made it through. I've heard they can be hardy during cold weather. We would stack the Jenga game up, turn the box upside down over the stack and try and slide it back onto the stack, if that makes sense. Best of luck!
Hubby said to stack it on a solid item like plate. Put box upside down over it and then use plate to flip it. He used to do that game with the kids all the time
I remember a few years back we had 9" on Halloween - quite the years. We had flurries here too this year.
It is warming up starting today through the next week. I am doing yard work (just came in to rest) even though it is windy.
Glad your greens made it!
Have a good weekend.
Oh wow on the snow! I think we have had some snow in VA in the mountains, but not yet where I live although it was 28 here this morning. Hope your greens make it. I think some greens taste better after frost anyway.
Funny about your Mom hiding the dishes in the oven. With my luck, I would forget about them and preheat the oven. :)
Hope you have a fun weekend.
Belinda, that's exactly what I did with the Jenga! So easy and yes your comment makes sense!
Chef,
A plate would have made it even easier! Good idea. Tell my thanks to your hubby.
Cheryl, It was windy here too. I got out in it for about 1/2 hour than ran back inside! You are sturdier than me. I want to plant tulips soon-maybe tomorrow.
Have a good weekend.
Kathy, it sounds a bit chilly there too! I bet the snow is pretty in the mountains of VA.
Mom did that quite a few times with the dirty dishes. We always knew to check the oven and make sure it was empty. LOL
Have a great weekend.
Yes I'll do that no problem
