My Frugal Ways this Past Week 9/8/19!

We went for a drive and noticed it was trash day in the neighborhood we found some good stuff before.  This Crockpot Instant pot was setting beside the trash.   Husband saw it and backed up and put it in the truck, before I even knew what happened.  Works perfect, no scratches, no dents, and very clean (washed when I got home of course).  I don't think she or he ever used it.  The book and plug was inside.  Can you believe that?

We also found a seed spreader for the lawn that goes on back of a tractor (listen we can't believe this either- not sure if it's as much as the one on Amazon but goodness they are expensive) and some other small stuff.

He sold an item we picked from the trash for $60.00 this past week.

I think we just might become trash pickers.

We picked a peck of green beans out of the garden.  There are more almost ready on the vine.  If the good weather holds out we will be able to get more end of this week.

I also picked 1 cup of black berries, tomatoes, potatoes, and one last zucchini.

We went on a cheap date to the auto show in Frankenmuth this past weekend.  We had a lot of fun and walked ourselves to death!  I think this years show was bigger than any I have ever been to.

We stopped on the way home from Frankenmuth and I found my grocery deal of the week.  A unbelievable price for Corn!    I'll be freezing some of it later today.  I use this method to freeze but I'll be cutting back on the sugar.

We had a bonfire with the grandchildren last night and they spent the night.  They have more fun sitting around the fire and making smores sometimes than anything else.  Simple and easy!

Goals:

Freeze all that corn and pick more beans from our garden.

If people put those kinds of things out to the trash around here I would sure be a trash picker. WOW, what great finds.

Cheryl we do have to go to a neighborhood where they have more money than us LOL. It's amazing what we've been finding.
Have a great day!

Now that's a super find the pot.I try picking but my husband is one of those people who are a minimest and has almost no belongings and I am a person who likes things to look nice and homey,he will not STOP and let me look. Sometimes I force him to stop because I will give him "the" look! How do you freeze your corn? If you don't mind.

Vickie @Vickie's Kitchen and Garden said...

You will win him over I bet eventually! I would love to see the look!
You can read my post how I freeze my corn here:

Grammy D has left a new comment on your post "About and Contact":

Frankenmuth! We went through there once and I have always wanted to go back. Do they still have their big Christmas store. Our son went to school in Holland and that was a nice place to visit.

Vickie @Vickie's Kitchen and Garden said...

Yes they still have that store and they've expanded it! It's a very pretty German town. Have a great night Grammy D.

What great scores! I would be driving around on garbage day for sure, at least run a few errands & keep your eyes open.

Our grandson spent the night last Thursday & ended up sick. We didn't get to do any of the fun things we'd planned & he's still sick today so he'll be with me tomorrow instead of daycare. He went to the dr on Friday. They said it was a virus & didn't give him anything. But he still has a terrible fever so his mom is taking him to a pediatrician tomorrow. Poo baby.

I only have one deal this week. I took advantage of the Tide deal at Walgreens. I found out about through Money Saving Mom. I used Tide when I was young & 'carefree', left it to tighten our budget for many years & went back to it a few years ago when we hit the empty nest. I love it so much.

Vickie so glad you were able to pick so much lovely produce from your gardens and needless to say what a great price on corn cobs. It constantly amazes me what people throw away but I am glad you got the instapot and lawn seed spreader as both cost a lot to buy at least over here.

Here is our savings for last week -

Internet savings -
- Dh rang up Telstra about our wireless internet & got more data for $15 less per month than the current plan we are on. He is really getting very good at this and searching for bargains everywhere we go and is quite enjoying it. He was rather apprehensive doing this before until he saw what bargains I could pick up :).

Purchases -
- Found skin on thigh cutlet fillets on 1/2 price clearance at Woolworths for $3 a kilo and purchased 3.352 kg. On special we also purchased a 2 lt chocolate milk and all up savings on the chicken and milk on usual prices was $10.91. We are trying to stock up our meat freezer with preferably all 50% of more meats.
- Ordered an e-gift card from RACQ for fuel and saved 5% or $10.53 in free fuel.

Finances -
- Paid near on an extra payment of $175 off our mortgage.

In the gardens -
- Planted some beetroot, lettuce and silverbeet seeds after adding fertiliser to the soil in the vegetable gardens.
- DH cleared some fallen ironbark branches from trees on our back boundary and cut it into firewood but there is still more to do.
- Watered newly planted silverbeet, lettuce and beetroot seeds in with town water from the drip irrigation system.
- Watered potted fruit and herb plants with cleanish vegetable steaming water, dish rinsing water, grey water pumped from the grey water tank and some town water.
- Watered the fruit, berry trees in the gardens with water pumped from the grey water tanks. Used grey water from our hand washing to water shrubs in gardens around the home.
- Used saved shower water to fill up hand washing, drink water bottles and to clean the bathrooms and toilet.

We are on severe water restrictions of 100 litres per person per day as of September 1 here due to the drought so every drop of spare water goes to water something here. Fortunate we are on tank rainwater for most the home so we can allocate most of our town water allocation to growing the vegetables in the gardens. It will be a much smaller vegetable patch this year.

Hope everyone had a wonderful week last week and will have this week too :).

Your water saving amazes me! No water goes to waste so you can keep everything green. We would definitely have to change our ways here. Your comment is a good lesson on how to save and use every little bit. Thank you for so much information Lorna and I'm praying that you get some regular precipitation soon.

Vickie @Vickie's Kitchen and Garden said...

So sorry to hear about your grandson. I hate It when they are sick and it always breaks my heart. I was tougher I think when I was younger!
I'm glad you got that great deal on Tide! It's amazing how much cheap detergent costs now.
Have a great day!

Most welcome for the information Vickie. We quarter fill a bucket to wash our hands in for the day and have a soft drink bottle of water to rinse if need be. The bucket of used hand washing water then gets poured on one the shrubs at the end of the day.

You can survive on little water if you have to and put your mind to it. Severe water restrictions make you think even more creatively on how you can make your water stretch as far as it can.

It certainly makes you think outside the box Lorna. We can get stuck in a rut and think there is no way out so I love your ways of getting by on less water.
