Pantry Challenge 2022 ....umm, and Menu for this week 1/25/22!

It was a nice day last Monday (before the snow/severe cold) and we decided to go for a drive.  I suggested we go to the Amish and Mennonite stores and enjoy ourselves before the virtual learning for the grandkids began last week.

You know, we just like to go when we can.  Going on car rides get us out of the house and keep us from going stir crazy.   I suggested going there because I thought  they wouldn't have anything in stock.  You see, the last time we went they were low on stock and the deals were far and few between.  So, I knew on the way back that it would give us something to talk about.  Well, boy was I wrong!  Maybe Monday morning is the time to shop..

So, just so you know the budget is blown but in the end we decided if we see it at a good price we should buy it now.  This is a different world now, isn't it?

Here are some examples of the good deals (none were out of date):

We bought Campbell's tomato soup for .59 a can

We found our Koegel's bologna!  This is a hit or miss item.

He bought smoked Pork chops for $12.62 (8 good sized pork chops)

5 lb bag of grapefruit $4.99

5 lbs of natural Peanut butter for $5.99 (I've been looking for a deal on Natural Peanut butter)

1 package of Jimmy Dean sausage for $1.50

24 count of fruit snacks  $1.99

There was more to a grand total of $129.36

Well, we had the money because we had saved the previous weeks so we are good in that respect.

This week's Menu:

Monday           Baked chicken, mashed potatoes, and gravy.

Tuesday           Steak (from Flashfood), and a baked potato

Wednesday      Chicken noodle soup  (leftover chicken)

Thursday         Hamburger stew

Friday             Hamburger steak  &   Twice baked sweet potatoes,

Saturday         There is bound to be leftovers

Sunday           Roast and the fixings

Breakfasts:   Fried Bologna/ham/egg sandwiches,  oatmeal, leftover sausage (x2), eggs, and waffles.

Lunch, your on own.

We are taking a hard look at the pantry and are going to fill any gaps this week because there is going to be truckers strike starting this weekend. Last I heard it is 38,000 Canadian truckers and no number yet for US truckers. This is in protest to the vaccine mandates at the borders. I am wondering how long it will go on. I advised our son who has a newborn to get supplied and I think they will actually listen to me!

Hello Vickie and well done on what you picked up for groceries that was hard to get and at cheap prices :) .

We are doing the same as you here in Australia is picking needed grocery items up as we see them on the shelves or at good prices and not letting anything run down. There are shortages on the shelves of many things along with huge price rises on some items. In fact each time I check the prices for our shop something else has gone up in price unfortunately.

We have built our grocery stockpile up further to about twice as much starting as of September of last year as there was advertised 20 - 30% increases in grocery prices advertised to happen leading up to Christmas last year and more coming into March April of this year.

We have only two things to finish our stockpile being more tinned cat food and tinned pears and we should be right to ride out the storm for a few years and only have to replace what we use in long life food items, fresh fruit, dairy and any vegetables we don't grow here.

Hi Lorna! So good to hear from you. Your very good about your stockpile. I'm glad to hear that you have increased it further. I hope everything gets better with time but just in case it never hurts to be prepared. Never has hurt anyone to be ready.

Thank you Vickie and yes good to be prepared :) .

I think we might all find it challenging with the transport issues/staff shortages for finding lots of groceries and other things we use on the shelves for sometime yet unfortunately.

We can do but our best though with what we have and substitute with other products if we can.
