Coney Island Hot Dog Sauce

When you come from the Flint, Michigan area there is one thing that you will always love, a coney dog.  We are surrounded by coney island restaurants and each one claims to have the best coney island hot dog sauce.

I quickly realized early in our marriage that my husband can not even consume a hot dog with out coney sauce.  The little things you find out...

This sauce is best served on Koegel's hot dogs if you have them in your state. This recipe makes enough to freeze -depending on the size of your family you might get 3 or 4 meals.

Coney Island Sauce for Hot Dogs

Printable Recipe

1 lb. ground beef
1/2 cup brewed coffee
1/2 cup chopped onions
8 oz tomato sauce
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1 tbsp. chili powder
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. cumin
4 hot dogs, ground

Brown onions and ground beef in a large skillet and strain off grease.  Add rest of ingredients, then cover and simmer 30 to 45 minutes until thick.

Now load up your hot dog with coney island hot dog sauce, a little mustard, and chopped onions.   So good!

I am confused about the ground up hot dogs. Are they added to the sauce, the sauce put on the ground up hot dogs, or added to the sauce and that put on more hot dogs?

The ground up hot dogs are part of the sauce. Sorry for the confusion. Then you put that mixture on top of your hot dog. I usually use cheaper hot dogs for the sauce.
