In our Home: The Weird Food in My Pantry (No Spend January)
As our pantry is slowly dwindling on our No Spend January, I've been noticing the weird canned foods that we have left in the pantry. Really not so weird as just kind of odd. Foods that too me that are just more for certain recipes or for specific times of the year.
So, it's not so much as why I bought them but why did I buy so many? I think it must of been a deal and wanted to make sure I had enough for a recipe. Okay, I'll admit, I just went overboard!
Here are some of the odd to me foods that I have run across so far:
4 cans of Salmon -4!
2 cans of pumpkin
4 cans of sweetened condensed milk
2 cans of black beans
1 jar of marshmallow fluff
1 big jar of Corn Syrup
3 jars of Molasses (qt jars)
I've been trying my best this past week to incorporate them in our meals/snacks. This can be a little tricky because you also have to find recipes that you have all the rest of the ingredients for or use substitutions. So far this week I've made Cinnamon Glazed Pumpkin donuts and Amish Peanut Butter Spread. I didn't have the buttermilk the donuts called for so I substituted by adding 1 tbsp of vinegar to 1 cup of milk.
Next week I have plans to put Black Bean Burgers (I think I'll mix it with hamburger) and Salmon Cakes (recipe coming) on the menu. I'm also thinking about making the pumpkin chili my daughter is always talking about.
Now for the sweetened condensed milk or molasses, who knows? There are so many possibilities!
What's in your pantry?
