My Frugal Ways this Past Week 3/31/19!

We had a great time watching the children this past week for their Spring breaks.  The weather was beautiful so that helped a lot.   It was just so nice for the first of the week we had them outside for most of the day.  They were so happy to get out bikes and summer toys. We even got to go to their favorite park. Of course, we collapsed every evening after they went home. Just so you know this morning we have snow on the ground!

They went to the local nature preserve for classes the last part of the week and had a great time.  The total cost for 2 classes for the youngest and 3 for the oldest was $25.00.  It was money well spent. The oldest learned how to make slime, filter water for survival, make a shelter out of sticks, had a picnic, saw many frogs and turtles in the ponds, and learned all about rock formations.  The youngest had story hour, made crafts, saw the frogs and turtles, and had a egg drop.

What a wonderful memorable week they had.

We went to two estate sales yesterday (Sat) and I spent $25.00 total.   It was the second day of both sales so it was 50% off.   Some of the things I bought were a yogurt maker (works great tried last night) for $3.00, clothes, towels, Tupperware, and my most craziet  purchase ever at an estate sale was pop (soda) for my youngest daughter.  She was so happy!  I bought 4 six packs for $4.00.  The great thing about this deal is for every six pack I will receive 60 cents back in bottle returns so my total cost for each six pack was 40 cents.

It was finally dry enough that I was able to get in the very back yard so I could trim both apple trees and the blackberry bushes.  Probably should have done this earlier but it was very wet and I would have sunk.  Well, actually I did sink the first time I tried going back the first part of the week.  My shoe got stuck and came off.  I had to hop to get back to it on one foot and them pull with all my might to get it out.  Yeah, I'm pretty sure someone had to have seen that.

Till this last rain I was able to start composting kitchen scraps again.  The compost bins are in the wet part of the property too.

I bought peanut butter on sale this past week and stocked up.

What are the ways you saved this past week?

Hi Wendy and I can so relate to sinking in mud in rainy weather and it would have made a funny video but the main thing is you managed to pull yourself and your shoe out :). The grandchildren sound like they had both fun and a great learning experience at the classes and glad you found some things you needed too at the estate sales.

Not a lot accomplished this week here in the gardens as we have had lots of rain which is a blessing and it is coming down again with 6.4 mm overnight plus more the next day and our rainwater tanks are full now and overflowing :), we still are putting rain barrels out to catch more water.

Our savings added up to $71.70 last week :).

In the kitchen -

- Made 3 loaves of bread in the breadmaker saving us $10.47 over buying them locally.
- Made 3 batches of Moo yoghurt flavoured with our homemade strawberry jam saving $8.43 over purchasing it.

In the gardens -

- Pulled down 2 more posts from the grapeyard vineyard.
- DH put together our post hole auger that turned up in the mail.
- Tabatha the cat caught herself a 60 cm Eastern Brown snake and dispatched it without being bitten. She brought it inside and quarantined it in the food storage room and wouldn't let us in there until it had passed from this world. She is one fiercely protective cat with her humans and got to say an apt hunter.

This scared me for the entire day as there was blood everywhere as I entered the room and I thought it was Tabatha's but fortunately not, and then I saw the snake on the other side of the room. We also had to keep an eye on her in case she was bitten for 24 hours as there is no way to see where our venemous snakes bite in most cases. Happy to say she is still her usual happy romping self this morning.

Finances and listings -

- I listed 32 handmade items on eBay using a free listing promotion saving $52.80 on normal listing fees.
- Paid our usual minimum fortnightly mortgage repayments and paid in addition the monthly interest on the loan as well to save time and interest paid.

Have a great week ahead everyone :).

Lorna, You certainly do know about rain. I'm glad your barrels are full now with water.
What a cat you have and I can just imagine you going into that room with the blood all over! What a sight that must have been. I love cats they are so smart. I'm glad she is alright.
You have a great week too!

That sounds like such a wonderful time for the kids. Lots of neat, fun and educational things to do. I would have enjoyed that! great deals at the estate sale.
I wish we still had bottle returns here - but we don't. My neighbor buys pop in bottles and gives us the bottles and I use them for emergency water stash. Sure beats buying water.
Have a fantastic week!

I deboned my thighs I bought on sale. There was still some meat on the bones... so I threw them in the pot of enchilada soup too. After it cooked I pulled the 8 bones out and got enough meat off them for another serving of meat in the soup. That was my biggest savings. There were no yard sales here... I wish there was.

Jenny I'm sorry I deleted your comment by accident. I have so many spam comments you're was in the middle. I'm glad you are getting better. I've heard from so many how long it takes to get better. I think resting like you are is the best thing you can do. Get better soon!
