My Menu Plan for this Week 6/3/19!

Grilled Rosemary Pork Chops

We are having beautiful sunshine today!  We had sunshine yesterday without rain too!   This gives me hope for planting in my garden.

I'm thinking the price of veggies will go up with all the flooding we have had across the country and in other parts there has been a drought.  Talk of tariffs too cannot be good for the price of goods (not being political at all, just stating what may happen).   Do you guys think like I do?  I'm thinking this is not the year to do without our garden.  This year we definitely need it!   I want to be prepared whether prices go up or not.

If you don't garden it's not too late in most of the U.S. to start one.  Maybe a tomato plant or two on the patio if nothing else.

Here is what I plan to have on the dinner table this week:

Monday                   Out to eat

Tuesday                    Leftover Lasagna

Wednesday               Grill out day -Grilled Rosemary Pork chops, green beans, and a salad

Thursday                   Grilled Hamburgers

Friday                        Grilled Hotdogs with homemade chili sauce

Saturday                    Out to eat (oldest daughter's treat)

Sunday                       Soup Beans, wilted lettuce,  Fried cornbread, and fried chicken

What's on your menu this week?

I am not sure what I think. It seems every time I go nuts stocking up then doom does not happen. Several years ago there was supposed to be a shortage of flour so I loaded up my pantry and then the price dropped And stayed there and no shortage. Most of the produce we get here is from FL, GA or the Carolinas. We have been really dry though. The biggest thing I have seen is tomato prices are predicted to go up 40 percent but haven't. I do have 8 tomato plants, peppers, yellow squash, etc. I don't plan to load up corn meal, etc because we just don't use a lot and it will just go bad.

Our heatwave has finally broken and it quite pleasant in our shady yard.

Exactly sometimes you just dont know what to do about it all. I guess it would be good to stock up on just what you use and not too much. You know that would happen to me too I would buy it and the price would drop.
I'm so glad you are getting some cooler temps now Lana.

Vickie your rosemary pork chops look divine :) and I bet tasted lovely.

I can commment on your question of whether prices will increase by our experiences here in Australia with the droughts and floods. Prices did go up substantially on meat and vegetables due to a large number of cattle dying in the floods in Townsville and also the extensive drought across Australia. We are talking about $1.50 kg on mince, about $7 kg on rump steak and the vegetable prices about doubled and things like flour went up and have stayed up by about 15c per kilo.

If you were to stock up I would look at what you use in staples such as grains, rice and flour and the like as well as butter which also went up in price by .15c per 500g but have recently come back down again.

Growing your own vegetables will save you a lot of money too if trends follow what happened here with significant price rises on vegetables and fruits. With drought and floods less grains typically are produced due to weather conditions shown by graphs I have seen from around the world on the agricultural sites.

With additional tariffs being applied to goods prices will go up and IMHO your groceries will cost more. When the government brought in the 10% import tariff on imported goods our prices did rise on most things.

I think that it is good to be prepared and get others imput on things especially from those who have been in similar situations.

Even though the prices are high on meat and vegetables here we are still able to get a lot of clearance bargains on both if you look and shop around. As an example most supermarkets are selling rump steak here for $23 kg and I got it for $9 kg from a smaller supermarket that were having super specials. My opinion is if you see any of these items on super specials then stock up then as we do here.

I hope this helps you Vickie and as a way of knowing try and look up some of the agricultural sites to see what production is like before the weather events and now on grains and the like and watch the news for any updates.

I believe your right about stocking up on sale prices Lorna. A lot of my stocking up as been on vegetables from the garden. right now the garden is not dry enough and time is getting short to have a harvest unless we get more days without rain soon.

So I need to find a good deal on veggies in cans and just stock up...I know it will be eaten even with a garden so no waste. It's just a change I guess and a gamble in a way.

I'm glad you still find good deals. It sounds like you know how to find them too!

Vickie also with the vegetables don't discount getting fresh vegetables either if they come on special as you can blanch and freeze them and stock up your freezer with them that way too and sometimes that can be more cost effective than buying the cans.

Here is the website I use for blanching and freezing of vegetables, just scroll down 3/4's of the page for freezing instructions -

http://www.pickyourown.org/allaboutcanning.htm .

This site also has fantastic canning and other recipes on it too.

Hope this helps.
