Getting in the Garden!
We were able to get out in our garden and till this past weekend. Some years we are able to do this early (we don't plant most of our garden till end of May) and some years it's too wet. This will help it absorb the rains that will come and help dry out it faster.
We were going to burn all the sticks but we watched the fire department stop at someone's house down the road while they were doing the same thing and realized real quick that it was probably not a good thing at this time. We have a pile going down at the neighbors and as soon as we can we will burn it there.
Have you thought about putting in a garden yet this year? I heard about MSU hosting a virtual seminar called "Vegetables Live! via Zoom and Facebook Live on it's Gardening in Michigan Facebook page starting today, April 20 through April 23. They will be held at noon (EST) each day and will last for 15 minutes. The talks will cover what to grow, when to start planting, and how to start seeds. Sounds like a great thing to do!
How's your garden plans coming along?

Amish have some spring things planted, not a lot. I will by end of week. We are under our annual spring no burn lay . Can't burn between 6 am and 6 pm. They do work with the farmers including Amish when they burn fence lines.
Can't wait to get started planting!
I bet it's very pretty in your area.
I'll be growing a few things in pots this year. I'm looking forward to that for sure.
I think that class Belinda will cover growing in pots too.
I'm mixing a few vegetables in with my flowers this year. I've added peas & cucumbers to a trellis that I usually grow flowering vines by my front door. We'll see how it goes.
I have a small bed of salad things by my back door around my hydrangea....a very small hydrangea given to me last year so there's plenty of room. My radishes & nasturtiums have sprouted but nothing else.
I also have planted 7 tomatoe plants, a few pattypan squash & quite a few flower seeds in my raised beds. I may plant okra & purple hull peas once it gets a little warmer. My husband really cannot eat many peas of any kind though so I won't plant many.
How nice to have a garden tilled! I haven't had a tilled garden in almost a decade. It's a lot of work!
I think we’ve had our last freeze, April 15 is our usual safe date.
We have potatoes, lettuce, onions, tomatoes and peppers already in the ground. And husband is putting down pavers and has plans to build a few more raised beds. I want to get an asparagus bed started for the future.
My deck planter boxes and big pots are ready to go. I ordered grow lights to start plants because I have seeds and the prices here are through the roof for plants. It is still pretty cold at night here so I will wait until it is warmer to plant the seed I will direct sow. Crazy weather and crazy times!!
Sorry to hear about those prices. Not good. I'm glad you got your seeds started Lana.
I love your idea about the trellis..umm I might have to copy that idea..Jenny!
Radishes..that's what I need too a little something different for the salads.
You are a ways ahead of us Rhonda, our safe date is not till the end of May. I'm ready for spring planting.
Raised beds I think are a great thing. Maybe we will have to start that soon.
The gardening workshop is such a good idea during this stay-at-home time. We're in southern Missouri and were able to get some spring plants in that I will start harvesting tomorrow - lettuce, spinach, kale - and then beets, radishes, swiss chard, cauliflower, cabbage, and some herbs have also been planted. Tomatoes and peppers are going back and forth from inside the house to the little plastic greenhouse depending on the near freezing nights we've been having. I'm new to gardening but am enjoying it!
Jenny it sounds like you are on a roll. I can tell your excited for gardening and I love it! Good luck with your gardening!
Another Southern Missouri Girl. When you wrote MSU I thought Missouri State University. :) Yes, I am getting a very large garden in this year. It takes a long time to put in and I am planting till Fall so I can have Fall crops too. It's my love and passion.
You know it does become a passion. It gets in your blood and you can't wait till Spring and then of course you need winter to rest from your passion! Have a great day!
