No Escape

I realize some (probably most) of you can do it but I'm having a hard time reading.  I can read how to books but I can not for the life of me get into a novel.  I'm relieved that I can watch a movie and enjoy it.  That's it though, the concentration is totally gone.  I've done this before when there has been some sort of catastrophe in the family but to think, when I need an escape the most right now, I can't read!

I hope that my means of escape will come back soon.  I'm so happy when I can read and venture into someone's else's world, if only for a few hours.  For now though, I'll read my how to books and be thankful that I'm learning something new.

Am I weird or is this happening to anyone else?

Please feel free to leave a comment and let me know how things are going in your neck of the woods.

It's the same for me as far as reading is concerned. I can usually get through a book in one day but right now I either can't concentrate or I fall asleep after 15 minutes! I have now found that non-fiction is a bit easier to deal with as I can dip in and out instead of having to concentrate on a plot. I'm hoping that will resolve itself soon.

We are exactly the same in this area Margie. I'm hoping it will resolve itself soon here too. I suspect our minds are just too full right now without things. Have a great weekend!

I don't think that's weird at all. I haven't been able to read a novel for a year or so now because our lives have been through so much chaos. So i started reading biographies. For some reason, reading real life stories has been easier to stick with. On days I just can't focus I force myself to focus through a few pages at least.

At the moment I'm reading 'Womenfolks' by Shirley Abbott. It's an 'old' book published in 1983. I picked it up at a local thrift shop a few months ago when I was browsing the .25 books. It's the story of women of the south...the authors family mainly but she goes back through history all the way to Scotland & Ireland. It's not in chronological order & the chapters on the Civil war almost made me quit reading. Her perspective is one I have never considered before for sure but it has made me think.

There is something about seeing a struggle from the past that others survived that seems to help me right now. History can show that it can always be much much worse than what we're living through.

Another thing I'm doing is writing scripture. I started a prayer journal (eye roll here because I really hate to journal) & I'm basically copying prayers & scripture into it a few days a week. I found some prayer prompts from lovinglifeathome.com & I downloaded them & am copying them slowly so I think through them. For some reason this has really helped me too.

I have noticed that I just cannot read digital books at all right now. I've always had a hard time with them but the extra effort I have to put into focusing on them is just not worth the pain. So I'm very glad I have a stockpile of very good books I've been wanting to read anyway.

Hang in there. I do still look forward to hearing how you're doing!

You and Margie have relieved my mind. Yes, I do love reading about strong women who have survived difficult circumstances, so maybe biographies might be the way to go for right now. I'll give it a go and see.
I've started writing a journal both here and my own of my thoughts of what's going on. I have done this before in hard times and then actually threw them away after everything calmed down. I didn't want to remember.
I love the thoughts of prayers Jenny. Even if you just copying them, I know that has to help.
You have helped a lot today. Have a great day!

I am happy to hear that it is not just me! I cannot stay focused enough to remember what is going on!

Aww this virus has taken our minds over. It needs to get out of here soon!

I have been the same. Since I can't concentrate on a full length book, I've been reading novellas. They are still taking longer than normal to finish. I have been mainly concentrating on how-to blogs and books. My daughter and I finally bought our own little homestead (5 acres) a year ago and are slowly building it up. We are teaching ourselves many new things, so maybe this quarantine and forced slow down will give us the unexpected time to accomplish some of these tasks. Since I've only been able to concentrate on these type of articles, I've learned quite a bit. I just wish the time would have been provided under better circumstances.

Hope everyone and your loved ones stay safe and healthy. We can make it through this if we stay strong.

Terri I'm so proud of you and your daughter and all you've accomplished. I love that you too are doing the how to books. We can always learn a new skill and it makes us feel good about our day.
I think if nothing else Terri this period it's taught me to appreciate my world and people around me more.
Stay strong (I love that) and be well.

I've had trouble concentrating on what I need to be doing. It's because of this pandemic. I just need to fight it and get the things done I need to get done. I hope yours passes soon and you can get back to reading.

While I haven't really been reading just for pleasure, I have been taking a book into the bath with me after all the chores are done for the day. I soak in Epsom salts for sore muscles and to unwind a bit. Recently I got a free copy of Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil, which I have wanted to read for a long time. I'm enjoying it in the small increments I have. Hope you are staying safe.

Vickie @Vickie's Kitchen and Garden said...

That sounds like a great way to unwind. It seems like we are always busy that's for sure! I'm going to look for that book, it certainly sounds interesting. Stay well.

Vickie @Vickie's Kitchen and Garden said...

The projects are piling up around here too. I have to prioritize them to make sure the urgent ones get done. It's a very busy spring and maybe that's a good thing. Keeping busy helps. I hope all this passes quickly.

It's not a novel, it's about an actual crime that happened in Savannah, Georgia in the 19080s. It's not your normal crime book. Instead it tells about all the crazy characters that the author met during that time. I', two thirds through it, and I still don't know who gets shot!

I'm having trouble concentrating too. I don't really want to do anything. Keeping the basics done, cooking, cleaning, washing clothes and baking too many goodies and comfort foods. I did get some seeds planted and started my first batch of sour dough starter.
Hope you have a good week, and I hope you will soon be able to enjoy reading again.

Vickie @Vickie's Kitchen and Garden said...

It's sounds good! Hopefully you will get to read it soon.

Vickie @Vickie's Kitchen and Garden said...

Oh Kathy, The comfort foods are going strong around here too.
We can only do what we can I guess. I've heard that statement so many times and now I know why. Have a great week too!

Whenever I've been a patient in a hospital, I haven't been able to concentrate enough to read. I imagine it is the same phenomenon at work. However, during this pandemic I have been reading everything I can get my hands on that I like.

Vickie @Vickie's Kitchen and Garden said...

I'm thinking eventually I'll call down enough to read. I'm so glad your able to..we need an escape!
