Gardening in November...Then the Wild Thing that Happen!

Most of our leaves are just now falling this late in November.  I hope we will get a lot of them picked up this week.  There is that one big tree out front though that's the last to shed it's leaves..I wonder if we will get to them before a big snow.

So, I have heard of the just leave them on the ground crowd who like to give insects a place to winter and I think that's a neat idea.  My favorite way though is to rake and spread them on the vegetable garden.  As they decompose they release nutrients and improve the soil.  I think they are one of my favorite fertilizers.  As a added bonus, they help feed the earth worms!

To shred or not to shred?  I'm going to tell you the truth here, we are to lazy to shred.  I know, I know.  We have been doing it for years this way though and with our long winters they mostly decompose perfectly.  We just rake them up and spread them out thinly on the garden.  By the time we are able to plant the last of May they are mostly gone and we plow them under.  For those of you with shorter winters or think it's best go ahead and shred so that they will break down faster.

We don't just put leaves in the vegetable garden we also mulch the strawberries, mulch around fruit trees, and put them in the flower garden.

Then the wild thing that happened:

So like, isn't this an informative post?   Well let me tell you we have another job to do today!   As we were raking leaves in the garden last night dear husband lost his wallet in the leaves (at least that is what we think has happened). Could it be in the strawberry bed or the vegetable garden?  We looked till it got dark and finally found his comb.  I think we are getting close...

So, if you wonder where I am today, my head is stuck in a pile of leaves.  Please pray that we find it.

Have a great day!

I was out doing leaves this morning. On the garden now. Snow will cover over the winter and I plow in, in the spring. Do it every year.
Have fun!!!!

Oh no! I hate a lost wallet! We go through this every three months or so with my husband's brain injury.

We have 2.57 acres so we do a bit of both. We have a riding mulching mower that we use to chop the leaves on the acre that is our yard. We have a LOT of leaves. They can get a foot deep if we don't keep after chopping them. Then our other acre and a half is a natural woods habitat that we just leave. We have all kinds of wildlife here as in we have a neighborhood bear, coyotes and the other day we looked out to see a deer standing in our driveway. Lots of small animals live in our yard and woods as well. We never know what we might see. I am not amused that the squirrels ate all but 6 of our tomatoes this summer. Next summer they better watch out because the tomatoes are not for them!

Oh man I just cancelled cards this morning after giving up on finding it. It did have money in it and his drivers license and so forth so he will have to do that again. Then we will probably plow it up next Spring. Maybe I'll give a reward to the kids if they find it tonight (if it's not raining). I can't imagine going through this every 3 months. It would be a lot of work.

You have a lot of acreage! A bear and a bear! I can't imagine!
I would not be amused with those squirrels either Lana..they are cute but not that cute.

we always take our wallets out and leave them in the house. Hubby farmed as a kids and said his grandpa and Dad really pushed this. Probably because of a lost wallet. Have you checked the car?

I think that's the best idea yet..I'll go tell him what your grandpa and Dad's said. I did a couple of times but I think now I should go back out to the truck and push back the seat. I'll do that in the morning. Have a good night Chef!
