Frugal Friday: The Garden Work has Started and Curbside Shopping!

Even though Spring Cleaning hasn't all been done, I've started garden work.  I'll get back to the cleaning soon.

Monday morning I started planting seeds to go in the green houses.    I only had one greenhouse last year but knew I needed another after I filled one up.  They are small but they will hold a lot of plants this year.  I heat them by small outdoor solar lights.

So far, I've planted cabbages and green peppers on Monday.  Yesterday (Thursday), I planted marigolds. I made paper pots for the marigolds.   The cabbages and peppers are starting to come up already!

Out in the garden:

While we were in Ohio I found some onion plants (candy cane) at a small grocery store and planted them on Monday.   So far they seem to be doing great.

It was hard to get back to the raised beds, the garden is very flooded.  Day after day we have had rain or snow.  Hopefully it will all dry up before Memorial Day weekend (last weekend or so in May) when we can plant without worry about frost.

We are using our old people got to have a ride time, to go curbside shopping.  We haven't been very successful until this last week.  We found a Eden Pure Electric heater beside the road!  It works but it did have a crack on the trim.  Our first find of the season so we were excited!

What are the ways you saved this past week?

Wow, you’ve been busy I. Your green houses and garden, Vickie. I love curbside shopping, and how neat that you found the heater. That’s terrific.

Thanks Belinda, Curbside shopping is a problem in the winter -I guess we need to accept the fact no one wants to clean out the garage in the winter. It's a lot of fun though.

Vickie you have done so well with all your propagating do give you a head start for the growing season and glad some have already sprouted for you :) . We have not been able to get out into our gardens either due to flooding so now that it has dried out a bit we will do that next week. Good pick up on the working heater on a curbside too.

We have been spring cleaning as well and deep cleaned all the outside of the kitchen cupboards, the tops, the double door pantry and top, the walls, the doors leading off the kitchen, and the outside and tops of the double door pantry and the outside and tops of the 2 freezers and fridge and DH took out the sliding kitchen cupboard doors and cleaned them with glass cleaner and put them back in. DH then disinfected all the kitchen cupboards, door surrounds, light switches and cupboard and door handles. We also mopped the floors in the home with hot soapy water and then went over them with disinfectant too. The kitchen cupboards, fridge, freezers and walls all look shiny and clean and the floors are lovely and clean too.

Then we moved to my car that looked like we had been mud rallying in it as we got caught in floodwaters on a medical appointment. I vacuumed all the inside of the car, DH cleaned all the vinyl, door rubbers and where the doors shut and cleaned the inside windows. We both cleaned all the outside windows, then washed the outside of the car so it is all sparkly clean again. We still have to clean DH's AWD but that will be for another time.

How we saved on purchases -
- I used $20 off our shopping which was rewards $ on my grocery card to purchase 1kg of cheese, 1kg of bacon, some bananas for DH and bought a hummingbird cake on markdown for $2.80 reduced from $7. The total with discounts we paid out of pocket was $3.11. With all our discounts combined we saved $24.80 on usual prices.

- In a discount variety store I found tins of cat food for .95c each and purchased two in different flavours to see if our cat likes them. That was a saving of $1.10 over the prices the supermarkets are charging and if our cat likes them we will change her over to this brand to save more.

- I noticed a dress shop I like to purchase my clothing from was having a end of summer season clearance with really low prices. I found a lined linen and lace dress for $15 reduced from $149.95 and purchased it saving $134.99 on usual prices. This will be a lovely dress for winter with a jacket over it as the fabric is so thick and the lining will keep me warm.

Hope you have a wonderful week ahead :).

We drive around to get out and always have our eyes peeled for curbside deals. Old folks enjoy this type of driving and shopping.

You are really working hard on Spring Cleaning Lorna. Send me some of your energy. When it warms and dries up I hope to get to the car...oh my the car. Think two grandchildren almost every day LOL.
I love your grocery shopping deal. Those rewards cards are the best!
