Husband bought 6 plants of hot peppers at our local greenhouse. I'm not sure what kind they are but they are long and skinny and he said they were not as hot as jalapenos. I picked the first few peppers green not knowing I was supposed to wait for them to turn red. I mean I just grew green peppers before. So, I cut them in half, took out the seed, and froze them. Not a bit of problem.
Yesterday, we found some red ones and husband said you could dehydrate them and make red pepper flakes. Oh, you know that sounded good. So, I took out the seed and kind of cut them up to put in the dehydrator. I decided to fill up the rest of the dehydrator racks with blueberries and the last zucchini.
I then, without thinking, popped a few blueberries in my mouth. All of sudden my lips felt like they were swollen and man, I was hot. I mean I was sweating it out, much to the delight of my husband. So, I washed my hands and rinsed my mouth and in about 20 minutes everything had calmed down. Oh yeah, husband gave me some milk. I'm not a milk drinker but he convinced me that this would help. Not sure.
About 10 minutes later I sit down to make out bills and did the unthinkable, I wiped my eyes. Oh, man, I rushed to the mirror convinced I must by now look like a monster but everything looked alright, just a little bit of red around the edges of my eyes. I washed my face and hands again for a very long time to make sure all the residue was off. Again in about 20 minutes I quit sneezing and crying. Life was good again.
So I feel like I can make this advice wear gloves, a mask, and some glasses and make sure that you don't touch your face when your dehydrating hot peppers.
Oh next year it will be green peppers only!
Here is the kicker exactly 5 hours later the dehydrator quit. We are going to Menard's today with our rebate that we received for the hot water heater and buy a new dehydrator today.
Life is crazy and so are we some days!

"Wash" your hands with lemon juice after handling hotter peppers. Really give them a good long scrub, then rinse. Works like a charm.

Let us know how the dehydrated peppers go. Never did that. My hubby is Italian, we grow green bell peppers. He coats them with a little oil and cooks down in the oven in roasting pans. Then he puts in sandwich bags and freezes. We use them with Italian Beef sandwiches, scrambled eggs etc. Good stuff. (plus he does all this himself which I appreciate!)

Yikes! That is so awful, Vickie. Bailey did that when she was about 3 years old and cried and cried. I felt so bad. My brother in law and I were canning ghost peppers one year and had to put them on the other side of the room as just the smell of them was making our eyes water.

Oh poor Bailey ..it probably scared her a lot. I can not imagine working with ghost peppers. That would be wild Belinda.
I always wear gloves when I cut peppers or I let me husband do it. I have burned my lips enough to learn.

I was cutting cayenne peppers and wiped my eye under my glasses. I went blind in one eye for a whole day and could barely see for about a week. I was in agony!
Practical I could see where that would happen. Oh my goodness.. Those peppers are dangerous!
