My Frugal Ways: Another One Bites the Dust

So, I found a head of lettuce marked $4.99 in a nearby town yesterday.  Believe me, I was so shocked that a head of lettuce could have such a high price tag.  Later that evening husband needed to go to Walmart for some things and he checked on the price of lettuce there.  It was marked $1.99, which is still a lot, consider it had no insides.  It was just some leaves wrapped around into a ball basically.

The lettuce is out bascially in our household.  The tomato is too. So what to replace it with on our hamburger?

We've decided onion and pickles.  The onions are from our garden this year and we just bought a jar of sliced hamburger pickles.

This is one way we've changed our ways in order to save on the grocery bill.

Another one bites the dust.

What swaps are you doing to save money at the grocery store?

I go to the grocery store and want to cry. I can afford food, thank goodness. I just don't know how others with families do it. I ask my son how they do it and he said they just get by. It is just crazy.

Head lettuce isn't too bad in price here. I usually get Romain on clearance - it makes it more manageable in price. If no tomatoes here - I use some salsa on hamburgers! NO pickles on my sandwich. LOL! I love pickles - but not on a sandwich, they seem to overwhelm.
Have a good one.

My youngest uses savoy cabbage or Chinese cabbage as "special" lettuce on sandwiches. That way nothing goes to waste as she can always cook it for a meal

Peggy it's like we don't want to spend all our money on groceries. It would be so sad but they are necessary. Famlies are having it rough for sure. Hopefully prices will go down soon.

Salsa! Thanks Cheryl!

Oh You know I have never tried either one of those cabbages. I'll look for that thanks Chef.

Iceberg was 1.48 yesterday at our Walmart. Try sauerkraut on your burger. It is delicous!

Lana, Sounds so good -we have plenty of that around here! Ours used to be $1.48 too ..last week. Maybe cause we are in the north?

Not sure is you have Sam's Club, or are a member, but I got a twin pack of good sized heads for $2.18 this week. Some of the outer leaves looked a bit rusty, but I took a chance and was pleasantly surprised. The inside was firm and in really good shape.

What a deal Carol! I should go more often to Sam's Club!

I only eat lettuce and tomato on a hamburger or cheeseburger. I cannot stand onions and pickles--allergies.
We don't really do without anything or substitute. However, we do eat whatever produce is cheapest, bogo, on sale, 1/2 price. We can afford any food we want, we just decide we don't want to buy pricey items.
$4.99 is an exorbitant price for a head of lettuce!

Vickie @Vickie's Kitchen and Garden said...

Yes that's it Practical. I can afford that lettuce but we don't want to buy those pricey items. exactly.

Yes Vickie, it's crazy! We usually don't eat store bought tomatoes, just kinda know we have to wait until next years from the garden (unless I absolutely need for a recipe). They are pretty tasteless. I bought a head of lettuce last week, looked pretty good on the outside, but when I cut into it it was full of rust. Got enough for two small salads but had to compost the rest. I've never returned produce to a store before but was tempted on this!

Vickie @Vickie's Kitchen and Garden said...

Oh I bet you were tempted to take it back, Nancy. Seems like a lot of our produce around here wasn't that good this year. Watermelon was not good at all and I was so disappointed.

Lettuce at Aldi here was $1.65, but they didn’t have any, so they substituted Romaine. It looks like they are out of Romaine this morning. I have changed the way we eat/buy groceries. You’ve probably read my post on the ten pound bag of chicken leg quarters. I would have given that to someone else before, but can’t afford to do that these days. We no longer buy beef roasts and haven’t for a few years due to the price.

I’ve been comparing prices for the same food. Right now for us canned carrots are cheaper than fresh. Potatoes are expensive right now, so we are doing without but making substitutions like rice. Sluggy mentioned that prices won’t go back down and this is the new normal. So, I’m being very conservative with the food we do have and making it stretch as far as I can.

Yes Belinda, this is all so true. Good thoughts. I used to would only buy chicken breasts but now we have gotten more used to dark meat too. We have to get used to buying different groceries so we can spend some money somewhere else.

Wow that is expensive lettuce. I like your idea for the onions and pickles toppings and cheese! As long as my burger has cheese, I am happy.
One of my favorite burgers at Red Robin was the Banzai burger with grilled pineapple. I also like sauteed onions and mushrooms. Oh and
A-1. Now I want a burger.

The sauteed onions and mushrooms sounds delightful! I will give that a try for sure! Husband loves a-1 ..Thanks for the suggestion.
