Frugal Saturday 5/20/23!

We had a wonderful time at the zoo on Mother's day with the family.  The Mother's were free and afterwards we had a picnic. I love the Potter park zoo in Lansing, it's just the right size.

We spend Thursday through Saturdays going to garage sales in the morning.  The best thing so far this weekend was a booklet of car washes that somehow was mixed in with the things we bought.  So, we got 5 car washes for free ($50 value)!  Who knows where it came from, we go to so many but it will help a lot!

Here is my small strawberry bed and that's rhubarb in the tower.  I don't like rhubarb.  I'm also growing asparagus that I don't like.  This goes against the cardinal rule of only grow what you like.  My neighbor likes rhubarb and my daughter loves asparagus. I'm going to try and love them both  LOL.

It finally rained yesterday.  I'm not sure how long it's been but we needed the rain for the soil and for our bodies. As long as it's pretty we just keep right on going like no tomorrow.   We do get a lot done that's for sure.  We will put in the garden next week.  There was a frost this past week but I think we will be in the clear this coming week as it warms up more.  As near or at Memorial Day is best for planting the tender plants in our part of Michigan.  You never know when the weather will turn on you!

I can not believe the price of plants and I hope everyone of mine that I started does well.  We went to the nursery and a flat of annual flowers is around $17.00.   I also saw vegetables for $2.00 a piece in a small pots.   We would not have a big garden if I had to buy those plants.

I just dug some Marigold starts out of my little greenhouses to plant in the flower garden.  I think I will also grow some flowers from seed too.  I have some perennials that will help with the pop till they the annuals flower.

How's everything at your house?

I agree on the price of plants! I will only be buying from the clearance section this year. Sales have netted nothing as they never seem to actually get the plants in to sell. But, we paid 70 cents a dozen for eggs this week so that is something to be happy about!

I do love rhubarb and strawberries mixed - that is a favorite of mine.
What a deal on the car washes - big win there.
Plants at the greenhouses here are more than that! They have really gone up. Crazy.
We got a really hard rain last night - and it is supposed to be beautiful for the next 10 days or so. I plan on planting garden over the next couple days.
Have a lovely weekend.

It's unbelievable Lana the price of plants. I hope you find good deals in the clearance section.
What a deal on eggs. They have been going down here but I'm pretty sure they are still higher than last year.

Greenhouses are so expensive...really all of it is. We seen a couple of people go out with nothing just like us.
I cant wait till it's time to plant Cheryl. This is my favorite time of year.

Loved the entire paragraph about rhubarb & asparagus! We need rain here in Northern Wisconsin too. I started planting some hardier things in the garden yesterday. We just had a frost warning but the next two weeks look mild. Plants are so expensive here too. We started tomatoes & peppers and others, but wish we would've started much more.
Only a few garages sales here so far. I noticed there wasn't very many last year. I know they are hard work but a way to make money and keep items out of the landfill.
Thanks for your blog-I enjoy it very much. Have a good week!

Nancy we stopped by a farm with a greenhouse and bought the best strawberries. They also had asparagus and we made ourselves buy some. I looked up a recipe and we thought it was pretty good. I think I need to tweak the recipe a little.
Wouldn't it be great to have a big green house so we could grow enough. I definitely needed to grow more too. you have a great week too.

How neat on the car washes! We had some rain this week too and needed it as the driveway was a little bit dusty, which calls for a car wash. 😂 I’ve not priced any plants to know the prices this year, but your garden looks good already. Asparagus and rhubarb are not favorites of mine either. Tomatoes are my favorite and I could eat them everyday. 😊

Belinda I'm glad you got rain too. I can't wait for a home grown tomato sandwich. It won't be long!
