Memorial Weekend and Garden drama! 5/26/23

It got down cold last night and we have frost advisory till 8 a.m.  I covered up my strawberries with old sheets and a blanket.  I took my hanging baskets in the garage so I think we are all clear.  I usually buy the hanging baskets the week that Menard's has them on sale, which was last week.

Yesterday, husband plowed the garden and made two rows for his potatoes.  Then the grandson and I planted 22 cabbage plants at the top of the garden.  I have 7 more.  Why I have so many I'm not sure but there you are.  Cabbage plants are more hardy and you can plant them when it's colder.

So this morning I'm getting my seeds  ready to get out there when it get's warmer today.

What else:

Well, I was out weeding the strawberries last week and I heard birds crying in distress.  I looked over and the neighbor's cat was proudly going back home with a bird in his mouth.  The horror.   I know, Vickie, it's the natural order of things, but still.

I was still hearing one I walked over to investigate.   That poor bird was a easy catch for the cat, it had become stuck in the netting with his or hers partner.

The other one was a tangled mess in the netting so my daughter ran for the scissors.  With only a few bites on the fingers I was able to cut away the netting.   Then I took down the netting and decided we may not have peaches this year.  It's just for the best.

So, my Memorial weekend will be planting the garden, planting flowers on Mom and Dad's grave, and going to a parade to honor the veterans.

How will you spend your weekend?

That was wonderful what you did, poor bird.

No special plans here for us this weekend. That poor bird! I’m glad you were able to rescue it from the netting. Erin from My Frugal Home staples lunch size paper bags to her fruiting trees and grape vines to save them from the birds. Not sure if that will help you out or not. I hope you have a great weekend.

Other Cheryl, yes I felt so bad that I was the one who put up that netting. Never thinking about what it would do to the birds just trying to keep them out. I'm glad it flew off.

Belinda, I'm glad it's safe and flew off! I'll look to see if where the fruit is and try the paper bags..as soon as I can get this garden in.

Lots of people use bird netting, so wonder if birds get caught all the time. Too bad about the bird. I put rubber snakes around things to scare away birds. It works and they are cheap at WM. Of course, you can make snakes from old hoses. Just put head and eyes on the "snake." move them every few days so the birds will not be habituated to the fact they never move around and are not real. Can you scare the cats away?

Good idea on the snakes Practical I have some pool noodles might work. That tree is right by the fake owl but that didn't work.
I have neighbor cats (3) that love me for my treats. Why did I ever start that?
