The Price of Everything and Free things this Week!

I finished the pillowcase for my Mother in Law and sent it off on Wednesday for Mother's day. The cost of mailing everything of course as risen ($34.00 for the large box).  She is worth it though and we are so blessed to have her.

Price of gas rose very close to $5.00 a gallon on Wednesday night here in Michigan...

Anyway, we  had decided to go on Tuesday morning and filled up two cars with $1.00 off a gallon at Meijer.  We saved $30 that day ...it would have been more if we had waited.  We find that the money off gas is the best deal on MPerks.  There are other deals to buy with the mperks but the gas to us is the best deal.

We also bought a lot of the $7 for 7 deals last week.  The apples and corn was our favorite deal...4 corn on the cobs for $1.00 and 2 lbs of apples for $1.00.  By the way, the same deal is running this week.

Free things this week (kind of)

I made a big spring salad with lettuce, green onions, and radishes from my greenhouse.

I also picked some asparagus and chives in the garden.  Not sure what to do with just 5 stems but I was excited!  

We stopped at some M15 sales that were out early on Thursday.  I picked up these egg cartons for free plus a few other things. Egg cartons are running around .74 each so I love it!

We are going out again this morning to see what we can find.   M15 garage sales in Michigan are 67 miles long this first week of May.  Although we have to figure in the price of gas...hopefully we can find something that will make it seem like a deal that we went. 😃

Memorial day planting 5/25/24!

All of sudden it got hot...Scorging hot for this time of year.  I had to get all the plants out of the greenhouse fast before they all wilted. So, he tilled once more and then I got started and planted 27 tomato plants.  It seems that my back is out of shape and coupled with the heat, work on the garden has been slow.    But we are getting it done.

Pop and the grandson planted three rows of potatoes.  Grandson, you can see, is now taller than Pop!  We will have to raise the roof pretty soon!

Later today, after the rain, I hope to go visit Mom and Dad's grave, plant flowers, and put up a flag.  Granddaughter said she would help.

Freeze, Frost, Death in the greenhouse, and Meet the Tillers!

 It's been a busy week:  

Wednesday night it came a freeze, not a frost mind you, a freeze.  I think they said it got down to 24 degrees.  You can see in the background of the garden where we desperately tried to  cover the fruit trees with old sheets.  We are short people so this is the best we could do.

Some trees really are too young yet to worry about but the apple and the peach were looking good before this.  Time will tell if are efforts worked.  

This is Friday -we left the sheets on last night for a frost.  I'll take them off later this morning.

The freeze got one of my tomato plants in the greenhouse.  I believe it's because it sits right under the vent. No other plants in the greenhouse were harmed.

That makes two deaths -I also had a cabbage plant also wither and die for some reason. There is life and death in the garden and greenhouse just as in our lives.

The plants in the greenstalk are growing fast.   I picked just enough lettuce to go on our hamburgers a few days ago.  

Meet the tillers.  I let them out to roam the yard and they go out all over the yard but they always end up in the garden, tilling for worms.  This will have to stop once the garden is in.

I made some Keto peanut butter cookies that disappeared fast.  Since this, I've also made some Keto chocolate chip cookies.

Happy Easter- Greenhouse Good deals, Crafts, and Mishaps!

 

Good Friday and Happy Easter Everyone!  

Our Granddaughter was over and we made Easter centerpieces.   I saw a clip of inspirational center pieces on Facebook and it looked so easy.  Just to let you know ours look nothing like that, but we had fun.  That's what is important.

I'm using my Easter placemats I bought last Fall at an estate sale.  People were passing them up and going for the Halloween and Christmas stuff.  I hope to find some Christmas placements this summer.

This last week I bought two shelves for the green house at an estate sale for about $5.00 a piece (the tall one is one of them).  It was the last day of the sale so everything was 75% off.   I now have four shelves but two of them I paid way too much money for.  It pays to wait.

My peppers from last year's garden succombed to the fridge/freezer mess so I bought more at Sam's for like 92 cents a pepper.  There were six large ones in a bag.  I chopped them up and put them in the freezer and we will have enough to do us till pepper season in the garden come Fall.  

I also roasted some garlic, just a tad, mind you,  to see how long to keep them in the oven.  It was too long and that was a disaster.   I'll try the garlic again after Easter.😓

What I'm Growing This Week 3/12/24

 

I'm getting excited for Spring and have started a lot of seeds inside.  Marigolds are growing in the small cell trays.  I have so many coming up that I'll make another tray with the extras when I can this week.  The pots are Brandy wine Tomato's -I watched a couple of youtube videos on how to grow them in bigger pots right from the start.  The little cells in front of them are peppers.

The greenhouse is a learning curve for sure.   It can get down to twenty at night and 110 during the day.  You had better open it up as soon as it warms up.  I open up the little window on top and the door is wide open.

Right now, I just have early and late cabbage growing in there.  You can see my gallon milk jugs under the shelf.  I spray painted them black to see if they will help the heat at night.  I have more to spray paint today.

I'm also growing a couple of chicks!  Isa browns are my favorite layers.
